Top 10 Favorite Hikes in (and around) the San Fernando Valley

By Madison Moore

For those of us who live in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas, we know how much "The Valley" has to offer. It's a beautiful area (albiet being a bit hot) and there's so much to do!

One of my personal favorite activities is going hiking, and some of the best trails can be found in the valley.

Here's my list of favorite hikes in and around the SFV:

1) O'Melveny in Granada Hills - One of my most favorite hikes (the last time I was there, I saw a group of small children on a field trip, elderly having picnics, and families) This hike is for everyone.  It offers good cardio and you set the pace.  (map)

Level: Beginner/intermediate

2) Aliso Canyon in Porter Ranch - This hike also is very good cardio however due to the fact that there is hardly any shade when walking, I recommend walking in the early morning or early evening during the hottest months in the Valley.  This hike is good for moderate hikers! (map)

Level: Intermediate

3) Limekiln in Porter Ranch: I go on this hike almost every weekend! If you can, head over to Limekiln after a rainstorm to see the stunning creek. For those of us who are less heat tolerant, this is the perfect hike, as it is shaded on both sides with rows of trees.  Look for the tree swing that goes out over the creek (hint: if you've reached the Tampa Av overpass, you've missed it) (map)

Level: Intermediate

4) Topanga State Park on Topanga Canyon: This hike has absolutely amazing views! You'll be able to see parts of the valley that you never knew existed. (map)

Level: Intermediate

5) Old Stagecoach Road (Chatsworth Park):  An interesting historical hike along part of the Old Stagecoach Road in the hills above Chatsworth Park.  The trail was used from 1860 - 1890 as a connecting route between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The hike begins at the park entrance near a sign reading "Old Stagecoach Equestrian Trail".  Notice the ridges in the actual trail which remain from the stagecoach wheels. Level:  Beginning to Intermediate

6) Bee Canyon in Granada Hills: This is a great hike that will get your heart pumping! Although you can set the pace I would only recommend this hike if you are really ready to work out. (map)

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

7) Rocky Peak Park in Simi Valley: If you want awesome views of the valley, this is place to go! There's limited shade, so early morning or evening is the best time to go. (map)

Level: Intermediate

8) Wilbur/Tampa Park in Granada Hills: You can get an awesome work out on this hike! Depending on how fast you go, you can really amp up the intensity here. (map)

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

9) Corriganville Park in Simi Valley: This is perfect for families who are looking to work out together! It's not too difficult, but it's still a ton of fun! (map)

Level: Beginner

10) Wilacre Park in Studio City: I absolutely love this area, and this has to be one of my favorite parks! This scenic hike is extremely relaxing and promises a good time. (map)

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

BONUS HIKE:

Hollywood Sign Hike in Los Angeles: True Angelinos have to do this at least once. The full hike offers 360 degree views of Burbank/Glendale area and then around the front side you can see the entire city from Hollywood to DTLA (on a clear day)! The views are incredible, and at the end of the hike, you can see the letters of the Hollywood sign up close! (map)

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

These hidden gems offer a great time and great exercise opportunities.  Besides their beauty, they connect us with some great spots in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas. I hope you get a chance to try out some of these hikes soon, and that you enjoy them as much as I do! Remember to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, comfortable shoes and your friends!  You'll see alot of dogs on the trails but check in advance to make sure the trail you're looking at allows your four legged friend.  Be sure to take water along for them as well.  And remember, this is nature so be mindful of the creatures that inhabit these beautiful areas.

See you on the trails!
